Starting your Composability Journey – 5 Steps to an Intelligent Enterprise

Composability allows companies to move on from a static, monolithic application experience, using the idea of different building blocks to break bigger tasks into smaller ones and addressing those smaller blocks, instead of touching the whole structure.

This will create an agile environment, where companies can quickly act in the best way possible.

But where to start your composability journey? Transitioning from a traditional approach to business to a composable one takes time. We suggest focusing on five aspects to start your transition to a composable business:

1. Look at the application portfolio already used

Before further extending your application set and risking further complicating it, evaluate your current one and determine which ones are already used and for what purpose.

2. Determine which processes or departments need optimization first

Instead of going about changing the entire enterprise processes, have a look at which ones would be important to tackle first, remembering that tackling one aspect at a time is part of composability.

3. Leverage and reuse existing applications and processes

After you defined the most important aspects to tackle first and you have an overview of your current application set, consider how the existing applications or parts of it can be reused to optimize processes.

4. Look at where processes can be automated

Automation is another important aspect that can support a composable business. As the number of applications and processes of a company grows, so grows the time invested in connecting those applications. By automating processes, you will free up time from employees ultimately contributing to the overall agility of your business.

5. Look for tools that support your company in this journey

A composable business does not need to develop all its applications in-house. But if it does, it will need to consider a composable approach in IT development, making sure that those are also modular and reusable across different deployed applications.

By allowing a visual and model-driven approach to application development, a low-code platform brings all the principles of composability together, making development even more efficient. As Forrester points out, low-code platforms can make software development 10 times faster than traditional methods. By allowing the reuse of different components, a low-code platform such as Flowable Work, allows quick customization, shortening time to market.

Ultimately, composability lays the foundation for new business opportunities. It provides agility, flexibility, and the right mindset for companies to quickly recognize arising opportunities in midst of challenging times.
